It is with a really heavy heart that we can now formally announce the tragic news of Merhawi Tesfay’s death. Merhawi had been both a friend, a volunteer and a tenant of Open Door since bring granted leave to remain in 2014. Merhawi was also an active volunteer with other local refugee charities such as MAP & IPC. Merhawi was originally from Eritrea, he was a bright young man always helping others and striving to make the most of his educational opportunities. He had been a successful aircraft technician back home and had been studying motor vehicle mechanics and engineering here in Middlesbrough.
Merhawi leaves a wife Semhar and daughter Eleanor as well as Mum, Dad and brothers and sisters who are spread around the world.
Merhawi was dearly loved and respected by many. He had a lovely smile and always had time for people. It was a privelege to have shared quality time with him. Merhawi will be missed but he will not be forgotten.
If you pray please keep his family in your prayers at this difficult time. But please also pray for the wider Eritrean community who have lost a very special brother.
